Access Gmail In Offline Mode

Thursday, January 29, 2009

Finally the most wanted feature for Gmail is out – Offline browsing in Gmail. gmail Gmail users will now be able to type the emails offline. Messages will be stored in Outbox and will be sent at later time when you get online. Besides this messages can also be read, labeled, starred and archived.  Outlook users are already familiar with this process. This offline feature is made using Gears. Hence you will have to download Google Gears if you have not done so already.

Yahoo mail & Zoho mail had offered this feature way back in July 2008 & October 2008 respectively. Google had offered offline-enable Google Docs and Google Reader earlier but had taken some time to offer the offline-enable email services. But now all the Gmail users including me are very glad to hear this news.

There might be some glitches initially in this new feature as pointed out by Google. This feature will be rolled out to all users in couple of weeks starting today.  To enable this feature go to “Labs” tab under “Settings” tab & select “Enable” next to “Offline Gmail”. Click save once done.  Once this is done you will find a new link named “Offline” on the upper right hand corner. Click this to start offline synchronization.

So now the time you loose the internet connection Gmail will automatically switch to offline mode.

Now I’m waiting for offline calendar feature to be released.
