GeoCities To Close Down

Friday, April 24, 2009

Free hosting service acquired for $4.6 billion 10 years ago by Yahoo Inc yahoo_geocities will be shutdown in few months. GeoCities is no longer accepting any new subscription.  As per them they would soon provide the information at their help centre site how individuals could save their data.

Yahoo last week had announced to shutdown Jumpcut which is an online service for editing videos too. Tough competitions from social networking sites has resulted the shutdown of GeoCities.

GeoCities site is currently showing advertisement of paid hosting by Yahoo which again is too expensive considering other web hosting service providers.

It looks like tough times are here to stay for more longer & the proverb “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” needs a change too.

Cheap Web Hosting said...

That really doesn't surprise me. As far as I'm concerned GeoCities has been dead for a long time. Who wants a junky URL with advertising all over your site when you can purchase web hosting so cheap these days? Social Networking would also have killed them to some degree.
